Michael Olise sidelined by suspension for Arsenal game as Harry Kane calls it ‘a shame’

Michael Olise was sent off in the Champions League on Tuesday after picking up a second yellow card, and he will miss Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal.

Harry Kane said his teammate would be “gutted” to miss the fixture against the Premier League champions next week.

The dismissal was Olise’s first senior red card and came in a 3-3 draw away to Norwegian side Viking, which earned the France international a one-match ban.

A costly moment of frustration

The referee was still showing Olise a yellow card for a tactical foul, which had been committed to stop a Viking counter-attack, when the Bayern forward tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic. That earned Olise a second booking within seconds, to cheers from the home crowd in Stavanger.

Bayern were leading 3-2 at the time, and the red card gave Viking a route back into the contest. Tripic crossed for Herman Haugen, who headed in the equaliser in the 90th minute.

Bayern’s comeback undone

Bayern had trailed 2-0 before fighting back with two second-half goals in quick succession from Kane, who scored in his ninth consecutive Champions League game. Luis Díaz had put Bayern ahead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.

The draw halts Bayern’s momentum after they opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over another Norwegian club, Bodø/Glimt, last month.

“He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said after the game. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”

Kane added: “We should have won the game with the second-half performance. You take the point and you move on.”
