Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund: Harry Kane skies penalty as Fabio Silva makes him pay in Der Klassiker

Fabio Silva scored a late equaliser from the bench as Borussia Dortmund salvaged a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane missed a penalty during a difficult night for the Bayern striker.

This was Kane’s first appearance since his Ballon d’Or win, and Bayern honoured him in Munich before kick-off. He made his entrance separately from the other players. The game itself turned into a nightmare for him in the second half.

Bayern led through Konrad Laimer, who scored in the 38th minute. Kane then saw his penalty strike the crossbar in the 57th minute. Serhou Guirassy levelled the match in the 60th minute after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Kane had earlier provided the assist for Dayot Upamecano, who restored Bayern’s lead in the 66th minute, but that was not enough.

Silva came off the bench to equalise for Niko Kovac’s side in the 89th minute. Lennart Karl then struck the crossbar with the last kick of a dramatic game. Dortmund held on to remain level on points at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Jobe Bellingham appeared to open the scoring earlier for Dortmund, following a mix-up involving Upamecano. A VAR check ruled the goal out, as it showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper before Bellingham swept the ball home.

Bayern had come into the match averaging over five goals per home game this season. They took advantage immediately after Dortmund’s disallowed goal. Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the frame of the goal, sent Laimer through on goal, and the Austrian finished at the second attempt.

A difficult run for Bayern

Dortmund’s leveller was a shock given Bayern’s dominance, but neat work by Guirassy created the opening that left Kane sweating. Kane looked to have spared his own blushes with a key assist, but Silva’s intervention made it a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.

Bayern face a demanding schedule while they are without their recovering head coach, Vincent Kompany, and their injury list is growing. Luis Diaz is already out, and Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry went off injured in the first half.

Bayern will be pleased to have kept their unbeaten record intact through this stretch. However, the match was an opportunity to open a gap on their great rivals. Silva’s strike, helped by Kane’s rare profligacy, means the two sides’ records remain identical instead.
